The original designs gracing both sides of this exquisite coin are credited to Jody Clark. The obverse features a fierce, rearing unicorn, one hoof overlapping the Scotland Crest. The unicorn has a collar and chain around its neck, used in heraldry as a symbol that the beast is tamed and ready to serve the king. This image is encircled by the inscriptions “UNICORN OF SCOTLAND”, “1/4 oz. FINE GOLD”, “.9999”, and “2018”. The reverse depicts the Fourth Portrait of the Queen, which has been enhanced for this release with an updated guilloche design. This interlacing backdrop adds a new dimension to the reverse, whose portrait now pops. Her portrait is centered within the inscriptions “25 POUNDS”, “ELIZABETH II”, “D.G. REG”, and “F.D.”, the last two of which are the Latin abbreviations of “By the Grace of God, Queen” and “Defender of the Faith”, respectively.
This beautiful coin with a bullion finish will be available in gold and silver, gold in 1/4 oz and 1 oz, and silver in an appealing 2 oz. size. Both sizes of the gold were struck in 999.9 fine gold. The face value of the two coins is £100 for the 1 oz and £25 for the 1/4 oz. The silver edition carries a face value of £5 and is struck in 999.9 fine silver.
