Silver Eagles Design

The heads features the prize worthy Walking Liberty image, originally created by Adolph A. Weinman for the Walking Liberty Half Dollars. It represents the gorgeous Lady Liberty in full-length figure gracefully moving towards the rising sun. Her body is enveloped in the US flag’s folds, and she holds an oak laurel in her left hand (a symbol of the Nation’s strength). The image is framed by the engravings “2017”, “Liberty”, and “In God We Trust”.

The tails showcases the majestic heraldic eagle, created by John M. Mercanti, which has been used on the obverse since the coin’s debut. The eagle carries a shield on its chest, an olive branch in its right talon (symbol of peace), arrows in its left talon (symbol of the preparedness to defend the Nation), and an “E Pluribus Unum” banner in its beak. Above its image are engraved the 13 stars honoring the 13 original colonies, followed by the coin’s denomination, purity, weight and the words “United States of America” along the rim.

About Proof American Silver Eagles

The US Mint introduced the American Silver Eagle series in 1986. The proof editions have been manufactured at the San Francisco facility (1986-1992 | “S” mintmark), Philadelphia facility (1993-2000 | “P” mintmark), and West Point facility (2001-2008, 2010-today | “W” mintmark). The mint didn’t produce any Proof Silver Eagles in 2009 due to the unprecedented silver demand and its obligation of supplying the blanks for bullion coins first.
